Etikhove

The plot is situated in the middle of the Flemish Ardennes: a rolling landscape with vast vistas, bordered by dense forests (STEP 1). At the edge of the forest a shelter should provide people with the most basic necessities of life. The building occupies an area of approximately 35sqm (STEP 2). The volume is lifted in order to optimize the view on the surrounding landscape. Additionally, this creates a covered storage area for wood (STEP 3).

The roof is raised on one side to maximize daylight entering the shelter (STEP 4). By making the volume funnel-shaped at the back, the visibility from the street is limited (STEP 5). The shelter is constructed from cast in situ concrete. Time will, together with the surrounding landscape, weather the volume. Lichens and algae will color the concrete shell into a landscape sculpture.
