Ajuinlei

The project site is located between Onderbergen and Ajuinlei in the center of Ghent. Situated at Onderbergen is a listed townhouse of architectural and historical significance. The building will be converted into a boutique hotel. The existing building on Ajuinlei will be replaced by a new building containing five additional hotel rooms. The top three floors will be configured as a triplex apartment.

With five stories and a set-back sixth floor, the new building serves as a fitting link in the streetscape. The façade is finished in travertine and features a vertical rhythm created by recessed window sections and intermediate panels. It offers a modest response to the eclectic row of buildings along Ajuinlei. The façade clearly expresses the internal division of functions, separating the hotel from the triplex apartment through a minimalist glazed bay window with slender aluminum detailing, referencing the historic bay windows that characterize the neighboring properties.
