Two interconnected buildings in the centre of Lede are being replaced by an apartment building with 7 housing units. The site is situated at the market place, confined by a busy junction with small sidewalks. In order to ameliorate this situation, the building line is pulled back from the boundary of the building site. This spatial gesture allows to visually open up the junction and at the same time to guarantee sufficient privacy to the apartments on the ground floor.
To join up with the height of the adjacent cornices and to allow optimal illumination angles and minimal shadow casts, the roof is cut up at the east and south side. The result is a diamond-shaped sculpture that crowns the existing ribbon development as a shining gem.
